Aveda’s founder was inspired by an Indian science of natural healing using meditation and pure plant and flower essences.

Aveda Is a Model of Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility

Many may take for granted a hairspray that does not pollute or contribute to global warming. One might not notice pure plant and flower essences from around the globe conveniently available at a Henderson Aveda hair salon. However, the facts and history of Aveda involve a remarkable journey of discovery and progress.

A Journey of Spiritual Discovery

A journey to India inspired a European hairdresser in the health and beauty benefits of pure plant and flower essences. Horst Rechelbacher studied meditation in India with a leading Swami. Called Ayurveda, it was an ancient body of knowledge used for health and longevity. Ayurveda inspired Rechelbacher’s approach to skin and hair care. Using a name derived from Ayurveda, he founded Aveda and used the principles of the Indian science of herbs and natural ingredients to make health and beauty treatments. Later adopting principles of sustainable economic relationships, Aveda became a leader in using fair trade and social responsibility in dealings with suppliers.

A Path to Environmental Improvement

In the period of 1970-1990, researchers revealed a worldwide problem of ozone layer depletion from chemical compounds in aerosol sprays. With global action, they were eliminated. Manufacturers replaced the harmful compounds with other hydrocarbons; however, they also caused environmental concern. These volatile organic compounds, called VOCs, caused ground-level ozone problems that contribute to smog. Researchers found that they aggravated breathing problems in homes and indoor environments. Aveda pioneered a zero environmental impact aerosol spray, and then engineered a low VOC formula that contained as little as 35 percent.

Finding a Natural Balance

Aveda is a model for environmental action and social responsibility. They harvest natural ingredients around the world, and they have made a commendable effort to balance their actions with global climate concerns. They acted to reduce pollution and harmful environmental impacts. Implementing the sustainable economic practices with suppliers and promoting fair wages, they maintain sustainable social and economic relationships with trading partners.
